How we photograph Cambridge graduation day (two good options)

Graduation photos can be done on the day, or on a quieter day. Both work well — it depends on what matters most to you.

Option A: Cambridge graduation photography on the day

We meet you before or after your Senate House ceremony and use the gaps between events to create a strong set of portraits and group photos. On graduation day, time is tight and Cambridge is busy, so experience matters. We work fast because we know the routes, the usual pinch points, and which spots give you great backgrounds without long walks.

This option is ideal if:

  • you want photos in your gown as part of the story
  • family are travelling and want photos on the day
  • you prefer a short, efficient session

Option B: A separate graduation photoshoot in Cambridge (often better)

If you’d like a calmer experience, we often recommend booking your Cambridge graduation photography session on another day. Cambridge is quieter, we can shoot at a better pace, and the results are often even stronger. Many graduates still hire academic dress for the session if they want the traditional look.

This option is ideal if:

  • you want more time and less pressure
  • you’d like better light and fewer crowds
  • you want to visit more locations for variety

Either way, we’ll guide you clearly, keep it relaxed, and get a gallery that feels polished without being staged.

How graduation bookings work (two steps)

Booking your graduation shoot happens in two steps. Understanding this now will save you stress later.

Tell us your graduation date as soon as you know it. Enquiries are queued in strict order. The first person to enquire for a given date gets first refusal on the shoot timings for that day. The second person chooses once the first has decided, and so on down the list. Each graduation day usually attracts 3 to 5 enquiries, so the earlier you write, the better your position in the queue.

The ceremony timings are only released roughly 10 days before graduation day. We explain why this catches so many families out in our latest blog post: The Parent’s Survival Guide to the Cambridge Graduation Timing Blindspot.

As soon as the timings are out, we write to everyone in queue order (if you get your timings before we write to you, write to us!). The first person picks their slot, then the second, and so on. Because everyone below you is waiting on your answer, we cannot hold slots for days. You have a maximum of 12 hours to reply before your slot is offered to the next person in the queue. We receive read-receipts on our emails, so we know when a message has been read… a read message without a reply counts as no reply.

In short: enquire now to secure your place in the queue, then reply quickly when we write to you with the timings.

What’s included in a Cambridge graduation photography session

A good graduation gallery should cover more than one “standing by a wall” photo.

Our Cambridge graduation photography typically includes:

  • solo portraits (traditional and more relaxed options)
  • cap and gown details (if you’re wearing academic dress)
  • family group photos (parents, siblings, grandparents)
  • friends and course mates group photos
  • a small selection of Cambridge backdrops (college courtyards, streets, and iconic spots when practical)

If you have a must-have list, we’ll follow it. If you don’t, we’ll guide you so you still get variety without overthinking it.

College routes and Cambridge locations (we keep it practical)

Cambridge looks beautiful, but graduation day is all about timing. We keep routes sensible and efficient.

Depending on your college and your schedule, we can include:

  • your college courtyards and entrances
  • quieter lanes near the historic colleges
  • classic Cambridge architectural backdrops
  • short riverside sections (when it fits your timings)

If your family have travelled, we’ll make sure they get the photos they care about without turning the day into a march around Cambridge.
